The Basic Formula
The purchase price is only the first part of water filter cost. To compare systems fairly, calculate annual ownership cost and then divide by estimated gallons filtered per year.
Use this formula: annual cost equals cartridge cost plus membrane cost averaged per year plus optional service cost plus electricity or wastewater costs where relevant.
- •Annual cost = filters + membranes + service + other operating costs.
- •Cost per gallon = annual cost divided by gallons used per year.
- •Compare systems at the same daily water use.
