Practical Overview
Certification language can be confusing because a filter may be certified to a standard for one contaminant but not another. Always check the exact model and performance data sheet.
NSF explains that certification to a drinking water treatment standard does not mean a system reduces all possible contaminants. PFAS, lead, chlorine taste, RO performance, and material safety may involve different standards or claims.
Use certification as a verification tool, not a broad marketing shortcut.
- •NSF/ANSI 42: aesthetic effects such as chlorine taste and odor.
- •NSF/ANSI 53: health-related contaminant reduction claims.
- •NSF/ANSI 58: reverse osmosis systems.
- •NSF/ANSI 372: lead content in materials, not necessarily lead reduction from water.
